A UK tax year runs from 6 April to 5 April. Mileage rates changed on 6 April 2026, so the year controls which rates we use.

What type of business?
Help

Sole traders and eligible partnerships use simplified vehicle expenses. For a limited company, we calculate the approved mileage amount for an employee or director using their own vehicle. It is an expense or reimbursement amount, not the tax saved.

Does the partnership have a company as a partner?
Help

Only partnerships with no companies as partners can use simplified expenses. A partnership involving a company must use another method.

Which vehicle?
Help

Each vehicle type has its own HMRC rate. Electric and petrol cars use the same personal-vehicle mileage rate. The bicycle flat rate is for employees, not self-employed simplified expenses.

Whose vehicle is it?
Help

Approved mileage rates cover an employee’s personally owned or leased vehicle. Employer-provided vehicles use different fuel or actual-cost rules.

Can you use simplified expenses for this vehicle?
Help

Select Yes only if you have not already claimed capital allowances for this vehicle or deducted its purchase cost, and it is not a car designed for commercial use such as a black cab or dual-control driving instructor’s car. Once you adopt mileage rates for a vehicle, continue while using it in your business.

What would you like to calculate?
Help

For a trip, earlier business miles determine how much of the first 10,000-mile band remains. For a whole year, enter all qualifying business miles and we split them automatically.

Help

Include qualifying business travel only, not personal journeys or ordinary commuting to a permanent workplace. Use your journey records; the calculator does not measure a route.

Help

For cars and vans, the higher rate applies only to the first 10,000 business miles. For an employee, combine car and van miles in the same employment; separate employments have separate limits. For simplified expenses, track the relevant vehicle.

Help

These actual business costs may be claimed separately from mileage. Enter costs for this trip or the selected full year. Exclude fines and costs already counted elsewhere.

Help

We subtract this from the approved mileage amount to show the mileage shortfall that may qualify for Income Tax relief. It is not a cash refund and does not include parking or tolls. Relief depends on eligibility and your tax position.

About this estimate and mileage records

The rate covers fuel, repairs, insurance and other vehicle costs, so do not claim those again for the same miles. Parking and tolls may be separate. The amount is a business expense or reimbursement, not tax saved. Keep a record of each journey’s date, purpose, route and miles.
